Don’t just build a website. Install a marketing system.
What to build, what to ask for, and what to skip when you shop for a website in 2026. Written for local business owners who’d rather be running the business.
By Dina MandeAI + Marketing Strategist
Your website is your hardest-working employee.
Or it should be. Most of the sites I see are a pretty brochure that sits there. Nobody answers the phone. Nobody follows up on the form someone filled out at 9:47 on a Sunday night. Nobody asks happy customers for a review.
I build websites for local businesses right here in Paso Robles, including wineries, a brewery, a downtown association, a venue and a real estate agent. The ones that grow all do the same handful of things.
This guide walks you through them in plain English, with no jargon. Use it to check your own site, or to ask the right questions the next time someone quotes you a new one.

2THE WEBSITE GUIDE
01 · The shift
Customers now ask three things before they call you.
Google. A friend. And now, an AI assistant. Here’s what the 2026 surveys say about how people pick a local business.
97%
read reviews before choosing a local business.
41% say they always do, up from 29% the year before.
BrightLocal Local Consumer Review Survey, 2026
45%
use ChatGPT or other AI for local recommendations.
That was 6% in 2025. AI is already the third most used source, behind Google and Facebook.
BrightLocal Local Consumer Review Survey, 2026
81%
of AI users double-check the answer before they act.
They go to your website and your reviews to make sure it’s true. That’s where you win or lose them.

AI may introduce you. Your website closes the deal.

02 · Book, sell, confirm
Book it. Sell it. Confirm it by text.
Reservations. Event tickets. Online orders. Appointments. How many of yours still take a phone call and three emails?
Every extra step is a place where a customer changes their mind. In wine country, where a tasting, a release party or a harvest dinner can fill in a weekend, that matters even more.
If they can’t book it in a minute, they’ll book somewhere else.
Your checklist
Reservations, appointments and event tickets right on your site.
Online ordering with secure payment.
An instant text confirmation, so they know it worked.
A reminder the day before, to cut down on no-shows.
Everything lands on one calendar, with no copy and paste.

03
03 · Be found
Get found, by Google and by AI.
Search is no longer just ten blue links. When someone asks Google or an AI assistant, “Who’s the best near me?”, the answer is pulled from your website, your Google Business Profile, and your reviews.
Make it easy for a machine to understand exactly what you do and where.
Your checklist
Claim and complete your Google Business Profile: hours, services, photos.
Use the same business name, address and phone number everywhere.
Say what you do and where in plain words at the top of your homepage.
Give each main service its own page, with real answers to real questions.
Mark up your business info so search engines and AI can read it cleanly.
Keep fresh reviews coming in. Both Google and AI lean on them.

04 · Catch every inquiry
Every inquiry gets an answer in seconds.
9:47 on a Sunday night. Someone fills out your contact form, excited. You’re asleep, which is reasonable. By Monday morning they’ve contacted three other businesses. The first to answer usually wins.
A fast, friendly reply beats the one you get to around tomorrow.
The fix isn’t sitting by your phone. It’s a website that replies for you, asks a couple of smart questions, and hands them a link to grab a time on your calendar while they’re still excited.
Your checklist
An instant text and email reply to every form submission.
Two or three questions so you know who you’re talking to.
A calendar link in the first reply, not the third.
An AI assistant on your site for questions after hours.
Your phone answered on the third ring, with a text summary to you.

05
05 · Reviews on autopilot
More Google reviews, without asking twice.
Twelve customers left happy on Saturday and not one wrote a word about it. Not because they didn’t want to. Because nobody asked, and nobody made it easy.
47%won’t use a local business with fewer than 20 reviews, and 68% want at least four stars.BrightLocal, 2026
How to build the habit
Ask the same day, while the experience is fresh.
Ask by text, with one tap straight to your Google review page.
Automate it so it happens after every visit, sale or appointment.
Get an alert for each new review and reply to every one.
Never pay for reviews or write your own. Customers can tell, and so can Google.
A steady trickle of fresh, honest reviews does more than a burst once a year.

Design your site for the thumb first. Big buttons, short pages, a phone number that dials when you tap it. Then add the human part: people hire people they’ve seen, and a short video of you or your team does more than any stock photo ever will.
Your checklist
Test your site on your phone, on cellular, not Wi-Fi.
Compress photos so pages load in about two seconds.
Put real photos and a real video of you up front.
One inbox for texts, Facebook, Instagram, Google and site chat.
